IFFHS has been giving this award since 1988. However, they were associated with FIFA from 1991 to 2019. However, in 2020, the organization started the practice of awarding the award separately. After 2020, 2021’s best player was named Robert Lewandowski. But this time it was in Messi’s hands.
The Argentine captain topped the list of awards with 275 votes. Kylian Mbappe (35 votes), Karim Benzema (30), Luka Modric (15), and Arling Haaland (5).
Messi had a great year in 2022. He scored 35 goals and 30 assists in 51 games for the club and national team. The striker scored a goal every 69 minutes. This performance saw PSG win Ligue 1 and the World Cup at the end of the year, the biggest success of his career. He also won the Ballon d’Or award for scoring seven goals and three assists at the World Cup in Qatar.
Meanwhile, Messi also won the IFFHS International Football Top Scorer Award. Kylian Mbappe is the club and international top scorer, and Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois is the best goalkeeper.
